Translation is the carrying over of a text from a source language into a target language. But you already knew that, didn't you? That's not surprising, given the ever-increasing importance of translation in our globalised world. Translation has allowed humans from all around the world to communicate and cooperate for millennia.
But as we, the humans, and our languages are constantly evolving, so is translation. In the beginning, the goal of translation were "word-for-word translations", which means translators would simply search for corresponding words in a target language. Nowadays, though, translators put great importance on cultural differences, context and pragmatics in their work - translations are tailored to their target audience and target culture.
